Re: Citizen South>>>
Citizen South is a fortnightly review on the state of surveillance, privacy and digital rights overall in South Asia.
Across the globe governments continue to undertake an assortment of actions to crack down on freedom of expression (including the right to protest) and the right to privacy, whilst boosting surveillance measures, ostensibly to tackle terrorism -itself usually nebulously defined and changing from month to month – and to protect citizens and the nation at large.
What is new, or perhaps just more overt, is a lack of even the pretense of protecting citizens from privacy violations, gendered or political online violence, and/or disinformation - with next to no calling out by western governments, whom in the past would provide lip service.
In addition to reviewing the state of digital rights in South Asia, we hope to showcase writing and research from activists and journalists on the ground in the region, discussing why it all matters in the local and international context. CS will also look at solidarity efforts, and the occasional victory if/where it happens.
